This is the most honest question a downtown Toronto resident can ask. UP Express is genuinely excellent for the right traveller, and Airport Transportation Toronto serves a different category of need. Here is the unvarnished comparison.

UP Express — Union Pearson Express dedicated airport rail. Union Station to Pearson Terminal 1 in 25 minutes for a low transit fare with PRESTO. Trains run every 15 minutes from approximately 5:30 AM to 1 AM, seven days a week. Reliable schedule, comfortable seating, free WiFi, luggage racks. For a solo traveller staying near Union Station with carry-on bags departing on a Terminal 1 flight between 6 AM and 11 PM, UP Express beats every other option on price and predictability. We will not pretend otherwise.

Where UP Express does not work. The five-word version: getting to Union Station, leaving Terminal 1. The longer version follows.

UP Express only solves the Union-to-airport segment. You still need to reach Union Station from your home, hotel, or office. From most downtown Toronto addresses, this requires a TTC subway ride, a streetcar, a taxi, or a 15-to-30-minute walk with luggage. From Yorkville, the Annex, Liberty Village, or the Distillery District, the door-to-Union segment alone takes 20 to 35 minutes including transfers and waiting. Adding the door-to-Union time to the 25-minute UP Express ride and the Terminal 1 walk-out gives a real total of approximately 70 to 90 minutes door-to-terminal. Private car is door-to-terminal in 30 to 40 minutes off-peak.

UP Express only serves Terminal 1. If your flight departs from Terminal 3 (most major US carriers, some international), you arrive at Terminal 1 and either walk approximately 20 minutes through the connected concourse or take the inter-terminal LINK train shuttle. Carrying luggage, this is real friction.

UP Express trains stop running before some early-morning international departures. For a 6:00 AM flight requiring 3:00 AM check-in arrival, the first UP Express does not depart Union until 5:27 AM. You miss the flight. ATT departs your downtown Toronto home at 2:30 AM and has you at Terminal 1 or 3 by 3:00 AM.

UP Express does not handle multiple suitcases for families or groups. The luggage racks fit a few medium bags. A family of four with full international luggage cannot reasonably use UP Express.

UP Express does not provide arrivals service. After a long international flight at 11 PM, you exit Terminal 1, take UP Express to Union, then take TTC or a taxi from Union to your home. ATT meets you at Terminal 1 Door A or Terminal 3 Door A with a name board, monitors your flight in real time, and drives you directly home.

When ATT wins. Family with luggage, business traveller with a fixed flight time, anyone with an early-morning flight, anyone with a late-night arrival, anyone going to Terminal 3, anyone leaving from a downtown address far from Union Station, anyone arriving on a delayed flight, anyone who values door-to-door private service with confirmed pricing, corporate accounts that need consolidated billing, anyone with a child in a car seat, or anyone with mobility considerations.

When UP Express wins. Solo traveller, near Union Station, mid-day Terminal 1 flight, carry-on bag only, weekday business travel. We respect the choice.
